Journey of Life

From the humblest beginnings to the conquering of a planet, this
definitive series visits the crucial moments in life’s journey to dominate
the earth

It all started with a molecule – a tiny random event, but one that was to
change the face of a barren planet forever. In a journey from sea, to land,
to sky, life has evolved remarkable solutions to the challenge of survival. In a fabulous celebration of life, this series journeys back to witness the key breakthroughs. The latest graphic techniques recreate evolution before your very eyes and reveal how the extraordinary diversity of life today came to be.

In five programmes, the series follows the history of life from that first spark to ourselves. Delving into the depths of the oceans, the viewer is taken to the very place where life itself began. From microscopic plankton to the enormous Blue Whale, the sea was life’s first laboratory – where everything from teeth to backbones, from sex to jet propulsion were invented.

It is on land that the first footprints are found – preserved for 500 million
years.Tiny tracks but giant steps on the Journey of Life. This series follows the story of how life conquered an alien world and a series of chance events and global catastrophes led from a fish to a human. Once the land was overrun it was not long before life went airborne. The miracle of flight
evolved four times in the last 400 million years and created some of the
most beautiful spectacles in nature.

The mammals evolved warm blood, hair and elaborate parental are. These
programmes share their most successful features. An alien biologist
wouldn’t hesitate to label us as a third chimpanzee.Yet in so many aspects of our lives we are very different from other creatures. So how has the human race been forged by evolution, just like all the other animals, but then uniquely, managed to break free from it?

It’s an epic journey through life, death, chance, and catastrophe which leads ultimately back to us.
