PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The atomic bomb dropped onto the city of Hiroshima was the first ever to be used in a conflict situation. As a result of the attack, and the bombing of Nagasaki three days later, the Japanese surrendered and World War II ended. This program tells the story of the day of the bombing, from the point of view of the pilot and crew of the Enola Gay, those who made the decisions and the inhabitants of Hiroshima. The US estimated that an invasion of the main Japanese island would lead to one million American casualties. Estimates vary as to the number of people killed in Hiroshima, but the total number (including long-term effects of radiation) was thought to be close to 200,000.
