DOCTOR WHO - WILLIAM HARTNELL

EPISODE DESCRIPTIONS (1a-2b)

(1a) AN UNEARTHLY CHILD - Fifteen year old Susan Foreman is the Doctor's granddaughter who attends Coal Hill School in London. Two of her teachers, Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, pay a visit to her home to investigate her background. However, "home" appears to be a police box, which is in fact a TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space), the Doctor's dimensionally transcendental spaceship, which plunges them all back to the Earth of 100,000 B.C. They are captured by a tribe which has lost the secret of fire. Two leaders, Kal and Za, are involved in a power struggle. Ian makes a fire for Za by rubbing two sticks together, but Za does not allow the time-travellers to leave as promised. By a clever trick, the Doctor and his companions escape to the TARDIS. (In this first story, the Doctor is very much the anti-hero, and is portrayed as a touchy, selfish old man.)

(1b) DALEKKS: THE DEAD PLANET - The TARDIS, now stuck in the shape of a police box because of its faulty chameleon circuit, arrives on the planet, Skaro, inhabited by the blond Thals and the evil Daleks, both survivors of centuries of neutronic wars. After generations of mutation, the Thals have become perfect human beings. The Daleks, who lost the use of arms, legs and bodies, are an evil intelligence housed in a protective metal casing. A Thal tells Susan that his race is starving, so she asks the Daleks to help, but they set a trap and the Thal leader, Temmosus, is killed. In a counterattack, the Daleks - powered by static electricity from their city floors - are defeated when the current is turned off, leaving them immobile.

(1c) THE EDGE OF DESTRUCTION - In a desparate attempt to gain control of the faulty TARDIS's guidance system and return the two school teachers to London 1963, the Doctor decides to experiment with a new combination. There is a violent explosion and the TARDIS blacks out. Susan and Barbara are convinced that it is the work of an invisible alien force, but Ian rationalizes it as a technical fault. The irascible Doctor accuses the two teachers of sabotage; he suspects them of trying to blackmail him into returning them to Earth. Finally, even Susan begins to suspect Ian and Barbara. However, they eventually realize the halt has been caused by the ship's defense mechanism, which is also responsible for the psychological disturbaces the crew experienced. The TARDIS has resorted to these measures because the Fast Return Switch jammed and the space ship was on its way back to the very beginning of creation.

(1e) THE KEYS OF MARINUS - The travelers land on an island on the planet Marinus, where the sand is glass and the sea is acid. The TARDIS is captured by Arbitan, Keeper of the Conscience of Marinus, a machine that controls the island absolutely fairly. But four of the five keys that make it function are lost. The Doctor and his companions go to some strange places in search of them: the futuristic city of Morphoton, a deserted jungle, an ice-bound wilderness, and the city of Millenius. On their return, they find Arbitan dead, murdered by Yartek, leader of the Voords, who now control the island. Ian is forced to hand over the four hard-won keys, but one is a fake which causes the machine to explode, blowing itself and the Voords to pieces and freeing the inhabitants of Marinus from its domination.

(1f) THE AZTECS - The TARDIS lands in 1430 inside the Tomb of Yetaxa, one-time High Priest of the Aztecs. When the Doctor and his companions leave the Tomb, the door locks behind them. The crew meet Autloc, High Priest of Knowledge, and Tlotoxl, High Priest of Sacrifice. Autloc hails Barbara as Yetaxa's reincarnation as she is wearing the Priest's bracelet which she found in the tomb. Ian is appointed Chief of the Aztec Warriors and as a result finds himself in competitions with the Chosen Leader, Ixta, who eventually plunges to his death from a pyramid in a fight with Ian. Susan is made a handmaiden, but she causes a ruckus when she refuses the last wish of the Perfect Victim - marriage. The Doctor rests in luxury with mildly with a beautiful elderly Aztec lady, Cameca. This, however, is to learn from her a way into the Tomb to retrieve the TARDIS. Barbara is declared a fake after she petitions against human sacrifices, but the crew escapes when the Doctor opens the Tomb door with an old fashioned wheel and pulley.

(1g) THE SENSORITES - The TARDIS lands on the deck of a gigantic spaceship from 28th Century Earth. Its Captain, Maitland, explains that they are under the control of a race called the Sensorites, who live on Sense-Sphere planet. This Sensorites are all physically identical, with huge, bald, bulb-shaped heads. Through telepathic communication with Susan, the Sensorites invite them down to Sense-Sphere for talks. The Sensorites proceed by explaining that they know the spaceship has discovered the mineral molybdenum on their planet, and they are wary of being exploited. The Sensorites fear the humans because many of them have died since another spaceship left their atmosphere. The Doctor discovers deadly nightshade in the city's water supply and tracks down the culprits to underground caves - three deranged spacemen left behind from the previous expedition. Captain Maitland promises to say nothing of the Sensorite's existence.

(1j) PLANET OF GIANTS - The doors of the TARDIS open and all readings indicate complete normality - but the travelers are only one inch tall! A crooked manufacturer, Forester, intends to capitalize on a new insecticide, DN6, to be used to increase food productivity for starving nations. He realizes, however, that eventually the product will destroy every thing for its molecules are stable instead of ephemeral. A government inspector, Farrow, finds out, but is murdered by Forester before he can reveal his discovery. The crime is witnessed by miniaturized Ian and Barbara. The Doctor, against almost insurmountable odds - due to their current size, they are vulnerable to such hazards as being washed down plug holes and tumbling into matchboxes - stops Forester from publishing his bogus report on the scheme, using a gas jet and a match to cause an explosion that goes off in the face of the evil Forester.

(1k) THE DALEK INVASION OF EARTH - The scene is London in 2164. The Daleks have invaded Earth, making many thousands of inhabitants into Robomen - Human Dalek servants - by clamping metal control discs to their heads. Other Slaves have been shipped to Bedfordshire, where the Daleks have a vast mining complex; they have discovered a fissure in the Earth's inner shell, through which they aim to remove the planet's core and replace it with a magnetic power system, so they can pilot Earth anywhere in the Universe. The Doctor and Ian are captured by Robomen and taken to the Dalek Supreme, who tries to change the Doctor in to roboman, strapping him to an operating table in the Robotiser Chamber of A Dalek flying saucer parked in Trafalgar Square. The rest of the TARDIS crew escape from London and head for the mining fields, where Ian confronts the Slyther, the Daleks' man-eating pet. Susan and a freedom-fighter named David Campbell manage to gain entry into the complex and destroy the Daleks' radio network. No longer under the Daleks' control, the Robomen and the Slaves are encouraged by the Doctor to rise against their inhuman masters. A bomb is detonated, which destroys the Daleks and their craft. Earth is now safe and Susan, who has fallen in love with David Campbell, decides to stay behind.

The Doctor is suspicious of these explanations and challenges Koquilion - to find that he is Bennett in disguise. Bennett confesses that he murdered all the spaceship crew and the friendly Didonians to conceal a murder he had previously committed on the spaceship. He had planned to take Vicki, who was unaware of his crimes, back to Earth to testify to his innocence. Terrified by 2 Didonian survivors, Bennett plunges over a cliff to his death. Ian escapes from the galley ship only to be sent to Rome as a gladiator, where he encounters Barbara.
