EPISODE DESCRIPTIONS (5w-6r) (5w) FOUR TO DOOMSDAY The TARDIS appears aboard a gigantic spaceship, seemingly void of any lifeforms. As Doctor Who, Adric, Nyssa and Tegan explore their new surroundings, they discover themselves being monitored by a mobile camera. Eventually, the crew of the TARDIS finds itself before Monarch, leader of the Urbankans, a highly advanced race of reptiles. Their ship contains over 3 billion of their kind in suspended animation. For centuries, they have been traveling through space, searching for the right planet to colonize and call home. They decided on earth. The Doctor and his friends encounter Bigon, a Greek philosopher; Lin Futu, a Chinaman; Villagra, a Mayan; and Kurkutji, an Aborigine. They are four earthlings who were captured on previous expeditions to the planet thousands of years before, their lives artificially extended by Monarch. Bigon warns the Doctor of Monarch's real intentions and they must devise a plan to stop Monarch. Through the aid of Bigon, Lin Futu, Villagra, and Kurkutji, the Doctor rescues Nyssa and convinces Adric of monarch's intentions. Doctor Who uses the same poison that Monarch devised to destroy humanity, to reduce Monarch to the size of an ordinary frog. Bigon and his colleagues turn out to be sophisticated androids with the freedom of independent thought and will. Doctor who and his friends leave them to seek out a new planet and a new way of life. (5x) THE VISITATION Its coordinates slightly off course, the Tardis arrives at Heathrow Airport 300 years too early, in the year 1666. The crew decides to enjoy the countryside and while strolling through the woods, they meet Richard Mace, an itinerant actor. He befriends them and takes them to a barn where the Doctor finds evidence of alien activity. The nearby Manor House has been taken over by the Terileptils, reptilian aliens who have escaped from a prison planet and are intent on taking over the earth. They plan to expose a virus to London that will wipe out the entire population. Adric and Tegan are captured and taken before the alien leader for interrogation while Doctor Who, Nyssa and Mace narrowly escape capture by local villagers who are under the aliens' control. However, the Doctor and Mace are shortly captured while Nyssa is in the Tardis. When the alien android tries to investigate, Nyssa is waiting and a weapon she prepared proves spectacularly effective. The Terileptils leave Manor House and head for their London base where the deadly virus is to be released. Doctor Who, Mace and Tegan are rescued by Adric from the Manor House in the Tardis and also head for London. They pinpoint an unusual energy source and trace it back to the Terileptils' laboratory. In the ensuing fight, a fire breaks out and the aliens perish in flames. Doctor Who is surprisingly reluctant to fight the blaze, escorting his friends back to the Tardis, having said farewell to Mace. As the Tardis slowly dematerializes, a small name plate is revealed on the wall behind it - Pudding Lane. We now realize that these were the events leading to the Great Fire of London in 1666. (5y) KINDA Deva Loka, a peaceful, tranquil world with lush and tropical vegetation is inhabited by a gentle race called the Kinda. Only certain tribeswomen have the gift of speech, but all are telepathic. Doctor Who and his companions have arrived and are relaxing in their new surroundings. Tegan comes under the spell of Mara, an evil force which plans to experience life on Deva Loka through her mind. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Adric arrive at the Dome, a base for a scientific expedition evaluating the planet. Sanders, the expedition leader, believes the Kinda are responsible for the mysterious disappearance of members of his team. He has taken two Kinda for observation. Todd, the science officer, believes them to be intelligent and telepathic. In the forest, he meets Panna, the nice old woman of the Kinda who hands him a unique box. Back at the base, Hindle, who is second in command, becomes deranged and places the base's self destruct systems on standby. When Sanders returns, his whole character has changed to a gentle, smiling innocent and when the box is opened, the dome is filled with beautiful images of life on Deva Loka. In the confusion, Doctor Who and Todd leave the Dome. By now, the Mara has entered the mind of Aris, a young Kinda male. It learns about a Kinda prophecy when such a male will find voice and lead his tribe in a great war. The Doctor and Todd also learn of the prophecy through Panna, who dies during a vision of the future in which the Kinda are destroyed in a war engineered by Aris. Aris has convinced his tribe to follow him as he leads them into a near battle. A stray shot injures him and he limps into the woods. Returning to the Dome, the Doctor prevents Hindle from exploding it, then goes in search of Aris. He traps him in a circle of mirrors and forces the Mara out of Aris as to revert it to its original form, a huge serpent, before returning to the black world it came from. At Todd's insistence, the expedition is dropped and the Kinda are left in peace. (5z) CASTROVALVA Now disorganized by the regeneration process, the Doctor must make his way to the Zero Room on the Tardis to rest until his regeneration is stabilized. Nyssa and Tegan do not realize that Adric is only a three-dimensional projection created by the Master while the real Adric is his prisoner. It isn't long before the Tardis'' internal temperature begins to rise dramatically and the Tardis is hurtling through the Time Vortex towards certain destruction - towards Event One, the "big-bang" which created the galaxy. The Master appears to have triumphed at last. Greatly weakened by his regeneration, the Doctor makes his way back to the controls and manages to change course, to Castrovalva, a peaceful world where he can rest and recover. The girls construct a Zero cabinet to carry the Doctor in once they leave the Tardis. They end up with Portreeve, the most important citizen of Castrovalva. The Doctor decides to search for Adric, but discovers that Castrovalva is in the grip of Recursive Occlusion. They walk in circles, caught in a space/time trap. Time is folding in on itself and the city has become a temporal treadmill from which there seems no escape. Doctor Who suspects that the Castrovalvan Chronicles are forgeries and that the planet's history has been invented. The girls carry the empty Zero cabinet to Portreeve who in actuality turns out to be the Master and reveals himself when he discovers the cabinet is empty. Castrovalva turns out to be nothing more than a sophisticated metal projection by Adric, under the Master's control. When the Doctor frees Adric, the city begins to disintegrate, the Master is dragged down by a throng of Castrovalvans and the Doctor and his companions escape in the Tardis. (6a) THE BLACK ORCHID - The TARDIS materializes in June, 1925, in Cranleigh Halt, where the travelers are warmly welcomed by the local gentry. Apparently, the Doctor has been expected and is invited to play in Charles Cranleigh's cricket match. At the match, it comes to the attention of Lady Cranleigh and her son, Charles, that Nyssa is a stunning look-alike of Ann, Charles' fiancée. After a superb performance at the cricket match, the Doctor and his companions are invited to a masked ball given by Lady Cranleigh and her son, Charles. Tegan and Nyssa are both given costumes, with Ann and Nyssa set to be dressed identically for the evening in order have a little game of their own. The Doctor is also given a costume to wear to that evening's ball. He retires to his room where he discovers a secret panel and disappears to investigate it further. In his absence, a mysterious person enters the room and dons the Doctor's Pierrot costume and attends the ball. The stranger attacks Ann and murders a servant and disappears with Ann captive. He locks her in a furnished cell and vanishes to return the Doctor's costume. The Doctor returns from his expedition and dons the same costume, and unknowing of what has conspired earlier, goes off to enter the party. Shortly after her capture, Ann has escaped and returned to the party to point a finger at the Doctor - holding him responsible for her kidnapping. The Doctor is taken to the headquarters by the constable who is in attendance of the party as a guest. The Doctor shows the officers the TARDIS, but they are not quite convinced, until another officer arrives to announce a new development that pretty much cinches the Doctor's innocence. But there is still a mystery to be solved… The Doctor takes the TARDIS from the police station back to Cranleigh Manor where the group awaits answers from Lady Cranleigh as to who is the mysterious man who has been causing the chaos. But before the truth is completely told to everyone, Nyssa is carried off by the deranged man who is convinced that she is Ann. The Doctor hops off in pursuit through the mansion which is now on fire due to the antics of the mystery man whom the Doctor realizes is actually George, Ann's former fiancé and Charles' older brother. The man drags Nyssa to the roof where he is cornered by Charles and the Doctor. The Doctor points out that he has the wrong girl, and that Ann is safe down below. The mystery man hands Nyssa over to the Doctor and as Charles reaches forward to the mystery man in thanks, the man suddenly leans too far behind him and falls from the roof to his death. The only legacy that George leaves behind is a book, "Black Orchid," which is the reason why he was hideously disfigured by the tribe that considers it sacred. He had taken a black orchid back to England for his beloved fiancée, and paid for it with his sanity at the mercy of a savage tribe of South American aborigines ever since. (6b) EARTH SHOCK - On 25th century Earth, scientists study fossil remains in an underground system when they are savagely attacked. Meanwhile, on boards the TARDIS, an argument develops between the Doctor and Adric, who wants to return to his home planet. It involves a dangerous maneuver which could endanger the entire crew. Adric insists he can plot a safe course, but before he can do it, the TARDIS materializes in the same cave system as the scientists. Upon leaving the ship, the Doctor discovers a dinosaur fossil that occupies the length of the entire cave wall. Some catastrophe wiped out these giant reptiles overnight, but the Doctor can't determine the exact cause. Lt. Scott and his troops capture the Time-Travelers thinking they are responsible for the earlier attacks. During the interrogation, they are attacked by two faceless androids that are able to move at amazing speeds. The troops are, however, able to destroy the androids, but before they all can leave the caves, the Doctor must defuse a powerful bomb. Lt. Scott and Kyle, the surviving scientist, join the Doctor in the TARDIS to trace the controlling intelligence behind the androids. They materialize in the cargo hold of a vast space freighter to discover thousands of coffin-like silver cylinders stacked upon each other. The cylinders, we soon learn, contain Cybermen, who have overtaken the freighter and turned it into a huge bomb targeted at Earth. The Cyberleader escapes on the TARDIS with the Doctor, while Adric is left behind. After overpowering the Cyberguards, the crew makes their escape, but Adric refuses to leave. He struggles to change the course of the freighter, but only succeeds in forcing it through a time warp, flinging it back to pre-historic times. On the TARDIS, the Doctor destroys the Cyberleader, but is helpless as he watches his friend die as the freighter strikes the Earth and explodes. The collision which he just witnessed on the TARDIS viewing screen was the event that wiped out the dinosaurs. Adric sacrificed his life to save the earth. (6c) TIME FLIGHT - On its landing approach, a Concorde mysteriously disappears into thin air. Simultaneously on board the TARDIS, strange things are also happening and the Doctor realizes the TARDIS is caught in the backwash of another time vehicle. They make an emergency landing in Heathrow Airport where the Doctor has much explaining to do. Everything is quickly cleared up when UNIT (United Nations Intelligence Taskforce) insist the Doctor be allowed to investigate the missing Concorde. He orders a second Concorde to make the identical approach as the first, but with one exception - with the TARDIS and its crew will be on board. Even though everything appears normal and the Concorde lands at Heathrow, the instruments of the TARDIS indicates that they have traveled 140 million years back in time. The Doctor realizes that Heathrow is an illusion and gets everyone to concentrate. Heathrow changes into the barren surface of a prehistoric Earth with the missing Concorde standing nearby - empty. Through a nearby citadel, they reach a city where they meet Kalid, a powerfully telepathic wizard. He controls creatures called Plasmatons, which form themselves from surrounding matter. Kalid steals the TARDIS and demands the key, revealing to the Doctor his true identity - the Master. His own TARDIS is damaged and he need components from Doctor Who's ship. Also, the citadel contains the concentrated power and knowledge of the Zeraphin, an incredibly advanced race. With this knowledge and power, the Master would be invincible. The Doctor is able to follow the Master back to Heathrow and manages to arrive seconds before him. He then cleverly deflects his opponent's TARDIS, flinging it into deep space. The Master has been defeated. (6d) SNAKEDANCE - On a visit to the planet of Deva Loka, the Doctor and his companions had encountered the Mara, an evil spirit which had infiltrated Tegan's mind. The Doctor had believed it to be banished to its "Inside World," but Tegan's subconscious is still in the in insidious grip of the Mara, which exerts its power by re-directing the TARDIS to its home world of Manussa, from where it was exiled several hundred years ago by the Federation. Manussa is still under the rule of the Federation, but the history of the Mara and its evil reign has degenerated into legend, a half-forgotten story used mainly for attracting tourists to the notorious Snake Caves where the Mara was supposedly vanquished. The TARDIS materializes in a bizarre on Manussa. The Doctor is mystified by the destination, but quickly guesses that Tegan has succumbed to the influence of the Mara. He equips Tegan with an Anti-Dreaming Device which blocks the suggestions of the Mara, but she runs off and disappears in the bustle and confusion of the bazaar. The Doctor is convinced that the Mara is plotting to re-establish its tyranny over the Manussians and the forthcoming 10-yearly celebration of its defeat, held in the Snake Caves, seems an apt occasion for what is known in Manussian folklore as the Return. Lon is the heir apparent of the Federation. He, his mother, Tanha, and the Director of Research, Ambril, are unmoved by the Doctor's warnings. Initially they tolerate him as a harmless eccentric, but when the Doctor insists the approaching ceremony be cancelled, their patience snaps and he is put under lock and key. Lon is an indolent and spoiled young man with no interest in Manussian traditions or the duties of the ruler. His bored and lazy mind is an easy prey for the Mara, who is still in Tegan's body, to entice and succeeds in persuading him to the caves. The Mara commands Lon to ensure that the Great Crystal is brought along to the ceremony. Known as the "Great Mind's Eye," the crystal has the power to absorb mental energy from individual minds. By consuming this energy, the Mara plans to regain control of the minds of the Manussians. Languishing in his cell, the Doctor despairs at being unable to prevent the Mara's triumphant return, and Tegan's death. But Ambril's assistant, Chela, believes in the Legend of the Return, and releases Nyssa and the Doctor. Chela directs them to Dojjen, a snakedancer who spent his life studying the ways and philosophy of the Mara. Dojjen is the Doctor's only hope of defeating the Mara. Under his guidance, the Doctor engages in a spectacular dual of wills with the evil force, and succeeds in releasing Tegan once and for all from the Mara's control. (6e) ARC OF INFINITY - When a detailed description of the Doctor's molecular structure - a Bio Pattern - is stolen from the matrix on Gallifrey, the High Council of Time Lords have no option, but to urgently summon the Doctor to his home planet. The Time Lords fear that the Bio Pattern is needed to complete a bonding with the Doctor, enabling a creature constructed of anti-matter to survive in the matter universe. So catastrophic would be the result of this union that the High Council decides that the Doctor must die to prevent it happening. Nyssa and the Doctor are convinced that a fifth columnist among the Time Lords is aiding the anti-matter source - whoever or whatever it might be. But their protestations are ignored and the Doctor is condemned to death. But the execution program is mysteriously intercepted and the Doctor finds his mind imprisoned and the Matrix - a fate marginally preferable to termination. His adversary is revealed as the formidable renegade Time Lord, Omega, who was banished to the world of anti-matter after attempting to conquer the universe. Omega now controls the space-time Matrix and is hiding on earth, in Amsterdam, and holding the Doctor's former traveling companion, Tegan, hostage. Using the stolen Bio Pattern, Omega plans to transfer to the Doctor's body and resume his physical life as a Time Lord. Omega extracts the Doctor's promise to co-operate and rematerializes him on Gallifrey. Councilor Hedin has been uncovered as the Gallifreyan "mole" who is communicating with Omega. Convinced of the Doctor's innocence, and the need to obstruct Omega's return to the positive universe, the High Council send Nyssa and the Doctor to Amsterdam via a Time Loop. But the Doctor is not in time to prevent Omega from changing into an exact replica of himself. There follows a battle of wits and a spectacular chase around the old city culminating in Omega's defeat on Amsterdam's famous "Skinny" bridge. (6f) MAWDRYN UNDEAD - The TARDIS, its instruments jammed, is forced to materialize on an opulent, but ostensibly deserted, space ship. The ship is in a fixed orbit around the earth, 1983, and the source of the jamming is a radio beacon on that planet guiding a transmat capsule. The Doctor is forced to investigate if he hopes to release the TARDIS. The Doctor travels to Earth in the transmat capsule found on the space ship. Nyssa and Tegan follow in the TARDIS, but unfortunately the radio beacon again interferes with the co-ordinates, and they materialize in 1977 - six years ahead of the Doctor. The Black Guardian has recruited the services of a young man, Turlough, to assassinate the Doctor. Turlough is an alien stranded on Earth and is masquerading as a pupil at a boarding school where the Doctor's old friend, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, is teaching. The Doctor meets Turlough and the Brigadier on the school grounds in 1983. No one to be fooled by time differentials, he quickly realizes what has become of Tegan and Nyssa. The Doctor returns to the space ship accompanied by the Brigadier and Turlough, ignorant of the menace posed by the latter. Meanwhile, back in 1977… Tegan and Nyssa stumble across the decaying body of a man. Believing his to be the Doctor in a state of regeneration, they seek medical help and find the Brigadier - the 1977 version. "The Doctor" is really Mawdryn, leader of the mutants who are in a state of suspended animation on the space ship. The mutants stole a regeneration machine from the Time Lords, but their attempts to attain immortality backfired and they are doomed to a state of endless degeneration - unless the are aided by a sympathetic Time Lord. "The Doctor" persuades Tegan and Nyssa to return him to the space ship, and the Brigadier goes along, unaware that he is courting danger. Both Brigadiers now exist in the same time zone - a fatal concept because if the two Brigadiers were to meet, there would be an upheaval in time, creating an enormous explosion. Safely back on the space ship, Mawdryn reveals his true identity to the Doctor and his companions. Nyssa and Tegan have been contaminated with the degenerative process - they too are condemned to remain on the ship lest they accelerate the mutation. Mawdryn blackmails the Doctor into agreeing to surrender his remaining eight lives as a Time Lord to release the mutants and the girls from their perpetual wandering in space. But Mawdryn does not anticipate the timely intervention of the two Brigadiers. (6g) TERMINUS - At the Black Guardian's request, Turlough has sabotaged the TARDIS and causes it to rematerialize on a cargo liner. The liner is deserted apart from two space pirates, Kari and Olvir, who have boarded in a search for booty. Only when the liner docks with a massive derelict floating in space is the ominous character of the ship revealed, for Olvir realizes their destination is Terminus… The ship's cargo is Lazars - space lepers who are being transported by a commercial company to Terminus for a "cure." The patients are processed by Vanir, a slave race also suffering from the disease who are kept alive by drugs provided by the Company. Nyssa is contaminated with Lazar disease and is herded along with the other sufferers into the forbidden area at the center of Terminus. There she is collected by the Garm, a gigantic creature, half-man, half-beast, who is controlled by the Vanir and whose function is to expose Lazar victims to a massive dose of radiation in the hope that it will cure them. The Doctor and Kari are puzzles by a co-ordinate reading which suggests that Terminus is at the exact center of the universe. The answer to the riddle of the derelict ship is found in the control room; as a functioning ship, she had jettisoned some fuel into a space void and the subsequent explosion was the Big Bang which created the universe. The one remaining engine is now in an unstable condition and about to explode. The Doctor enlists the helps of the Garm to disconnect the engine seconds before the Big bang which would have destroyed the universe. Cured by the Garm's treatment, Nyssa sees an opportunity to use her training in bio-electronics to help the Vanir run Terminus as a successful hospital ship. Reluctantly, the Doctor agrees to leave Nyssa on board the liner. (6h) ENLIGHTENMENT - The White Guardian alerts the Doctor to a great danger causing him to rematerialize the TARDIS on Captain Striker's Edwardian yacht which turns out to be a space ship piloted by Eternals - parasitic aliens who feed off the thoughts and emotions of humans known contemptuously as Ephemerals. Bored with the amount of time on their hands, the Eternals devise "amusements." In this case the amusement is a race through the solar system between period sailing ships manned by Ephemerals borrowed from the past. The prize for the winner is "enlightenment," total knowledge and experience which would enable Eternals to attain existence. Turlough is still the reluctant agent of the Black Guardian and attempts to escape his influence by suicidally jumping into space. But he is rescued by Captain Wrack, female commander of the pirate ship, The Buccaneer, a leading contender in the race. Two ships are destroyed, presumably hit by asteroids. Turlough, however, discovers that wrack is using a concentrated beam of mental energy, derived from the power of the Black Guardian, to obliterate her rivals. Suspecting Striker's yacht to be the next target, the Doctor boards the Buccaneer and discovers Wrack's power source, managing to eject her into space. The Doctor pilots the ship into port and inadvertently wins the race. As victor, the Doctor is offered "enlightenment" by both the Black and White Guardians, but declines. Turlough, in turn, is offered the prize, and by rejecting "enlightenment" neutralizes the Black guardian's power and escapes his influence. (6j) THE KING'S DEMONS - The TARDIS interrupts a jousting match in 13th century England. The guest of honor at the medieval tournament is King John. Strangely unperturbed by the materialization of a "blue engine" from thin air, the King welcomes the Doctor and his colleagues and offers them protection as his "demons." Lord Ranulf and Lady Isabella, the King's hosts, are concerned at the change in their monarch's behavior. His customary benevolence and generosity have been replaced by a sinister vindictiveness. The Doctor himself is suspicious of the influence exerted over King John by his champion, the French knight, Sir Gilles Estram. Ranulf's cousin, Sir Geoffrey de Lacey, returns from London where he claims to have just left King John. De Lacey is condemned to death for his treacherous suggestion that the king is an impostor. While trying to save de Lacey, the Doctor is tricked into a dual with Sir Gilles. Defeated in a spectacular sword fight, sir Gilles reveals his true identity as the Doctor's old foe, the Master. As a mild amusement, the master plans to thwart the signing of the Magna Carta, thus preventing the inception of parliamentary democracy in England - "small-time villainy" as the Doctor comments. The instrument of the Master's schemes is a sophisticated android, Kamelion, who can adopt any form and is successfully impersonating King John. The Master convinces the medieval court that the Doctor is in fact a demon sent to destroy the King. The Doctor has no option but to engage his adversary in a titanic battle of wills for control of Kamelion and the fate of Magna Carta. The Doctor is successful and Kamelion joins the crew of the TARDIS. (6k) THE FIVE DOCTORS - The Doctor, played by Peter Davison; and his previous selves in the forms of Richard Hurndall (playing for the deceased William Hartnell), Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee are each mysteriously lifted out of their time streams and placed in the Death Zone on the planet Gallifrey, home of the Time Lords. The Doctor, as portrayed by Tom Baker, finds himself trapped in a temporal void. Also time-scooped to the Zone are some of the Doctor's former companions: Sarah Jane Smith, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Susan Foreman, Turlough and Tegan. Meanwhile, at the inner cabinet of Time Lords, Lord President Borusa, the Castellan and Thalia are concerned by the unusual series of events. In desperation, they enlist the aid of the Master, who will return for rescuing the Doctors, will again be granted the power to regenerate. Eventually the Doctors learn the reason for their being in the zone - to play the Game of Rassilon. It is a series of problem solving situations with a loser's prize of instant death, delivered by various foes including the Cybermen, Daleks, and Yeti. But there is more to the Game than they realize. The Doctors' adventures and the final discovery and motivation of their adversary makes for an exciting adventure in Time and Space. (6l) WARRIORS OF THE DEEP - In the year 2084, a combined force of Silurians and Sea Devils, led by Icthar, is planning a take over attack of the earth. These creatures are the original inhabitants of earth and they are planing to start a war between the two human power blocks that will result in the total destruction of human life, allowing them to regain total control. The TARDIS materializes inside Sea Base Four, an underwater defense system, and after futile chase, the Time Travelers are apprehended. Their story that they were on the base by accident is partially believed after Preston, one of the Base's officers, has seen the inside of the TARDIS. The Silurians attack advances as Myrka, a seemingly indestructible monster at work for the Silurians, breaks into the base. The Doctor manages to temporarily blind it while Turlough assists in the escape of his companions. However, this action gives Myrka access to the entire Base. The Doctor constructs an ultra violet light that destroys the monster, but the attack has been successful and the Base and its crew are captured. Outside, Tegan and the Doctor are captures by the Sea Devils. The Doctor manages to convince Icthar that they have met before, but can't convince him to give up the plan. The Doctor and his companions escape through the ventilation system and after witnessing the death of Preston at the hands of the invaders, the Doctor is forced to use a deadly gas that kills Silurians and Sea Devils. The death missiles are stopped in the nick of time and mankind has been saved once again. (6m) THE AWAKENING - On a quiet visit to Tegan's grandfather, the Doctor and his companions find all the residents of the small village engaged in a dangerous recreation of an English Civil War battle between the Roundheads and Royalists. Tegan's grandfather has mysteriously disappeared and when she impetuously goes off in search of him, a strange hooded figure steals her hand bag and locks her in a barn. The Doctor, who was being held by Sir George Hutchinson, organizer of the war games, escapes and gives chase to the same hooded figure. The chase leads back to the church, where the TARDIS first materialized, to discover a psychic projection. Upon exploring more of the ancient church, the Doctor finds a secret passageway where he meets Jane Hampden, the local schoolteacher and only person not involved in the games. She was also being held prisoner, but escaped and returned to the church with the Doctor. Meanwhile, Tegan has been captured by Sir George who is becoming more deranged. He decides that Tegan shall be Queen of the May - a role that will end in death for her. The Doctor discovers that a time warp has been created by the Malus, an evil cargo that was part of an alien ship. Its power is growing and when its face is revealed it seems to correspond with a 17th century representation of the devil on the church wall. Sir George wants to change the future of mankind by liberating the Malus. The Doctor substitutes Tegan with a life sized doll while everyone makes their way into the safety of the TARDIS. The Doctor succeeds in cutting off the Malus from its power source - fear and hate. In a final attempt to complete its mission, the Malus launches an attack of psychic projections which fails, destroying the church and itself in the process. Tegan's grandfather is rescued and the Doctor and his friends decide to take the peaceful rest they originally planned. (6n) FRONTIOS - A meteor shower forces the TARDIS to land on Frontios, a planet on the edge of the known universe. Earth colonists, lead by Brazen Plantagenet, crashed on arrival years earlier. Strange and sinister events have been taking place on Frontios since then. Another meteor storm starts and the Doctor decides that it is time to leave - only to find the TARDIS gone and in its place, a smoking empty space with only the hat stand as evidence of its existence remains. So dangerous is their situation, they don't have time to ponder their loss, and must immediately fight for survival. Gaining access to the previously locked research room, Norna and Turlough work on analyzing the meteorites. Tegan helps in the medical center which become chaotic when Plantagenet suffers a near fatal heart attack, but the Doctor is able to save his life. Turlough and Norna discover an entrance to a complex series of tunnels beneath the research room and are quickly joined by the Doctor, Tegan and Range, the chief science officer. Lurking in the tunnels is the Gravis and a group of fellow Tractators, creatures with enormous gravitational powers. Their intention is to use the planet as a space ship, take it to another solar system, and colonize it. The meteor storms and the disastrous crash of the colonists' original ship turn out to have been caused by the Tractators. Also, perhaps most horrible of all, they need the bodies and minds of the humans to drive their vast excavating machines. The Doctor discovers the remains of the TARDIS, which was destroyed in the craft to persuade the unwitting Gravis to reassemble it. This cuts Gravis off from its fellows, who have now become harmless burrowing creatures. The Gravis are removed to a remote, barren planet and Frontios is once again safe for the colonists. (6p) RESURRECTION OF THE DALEKS - The Daleks are back! Aided by Lytton and his troopers, they intend to take over the earth by duplicating key personnel. But first they must release their creator, Davros, from his 90 years in a frozen tomb aboard a prison space station. Meanwhile, the Doctor, Tegan and Turlough have been trapped in a Time Corridor and are being forced to Earth. The intention had been for the Daleks to capture the Doctor and offer him to Davros. As this has failed, Stien, one of Lytton's men, has been sent to trap him. In a warehouse on Wapping High Street, very close to where the TARDIS landed, alien artifacts have been found during the work. Mistaking them for a WW II bomb, a bomb disposal team, lead by Colonel Archer, and a civilian, Professor Laird have been dispatched to deal with it. Stien meets up with the Doctor and convinces him that he has escaped from the Dalek ship via the time Corridor. The Doctor and party go to the warehouse where the Time Corridor is located and are captured by Colonel Archer. Meanwhile, the prison space station containing Davros has been attacked. All but Styles and a few other members of the crew have been killed. Realizing they cannot escape, Styles says they must destroy the station before Davros can be removed from it. Davros is actually a replica created by the Daleks who also wanted to create a copy of the Doctor whom they would control and order to kill the Time Lords' high Council. However, on the Dalek ship, all is not well. The Daleks have suffered badly in the Movellan war and have been infected by a deadly virus. Unable to find a cure, the Daleks have been forced to free their creator. But Davros is cautious, remembering how the Daleks treated him in the past. Stien in turn activates Davros's self destruct switch, destroying both the space prison and the Daleks. Ultimately, the Doctor is captured by the Daleks and learns of the duplication process. He in turn infects them with the same virus that claimed their fellow Daleks on the prison station. Lytton stays in the 20th century with two Dalek-made duplicates of policemen and Tegan, tired of all the violence, decides to leave the TARDIS crew. (6q) PLANET OF FIRE - Attracted to the Island of Lanzerote by the sudden ignition of an alien distress signal, the Doctor meets Professor Foster and his American step-daughter, Perpugilliam Brown (Peri for short). Meanwhile, Turlough and Kamelion are behaving rather strangely. Turlough has recognized the source of the signal and Kamelion had again come under influence of the Master. With Peri on board the TARDIS, Kamelion sets the controls of the TARDIS and they are involuntarily transported to the planet Sarn. The planet is on the verge of being destroyed by volcanic activity and civil unrest is high. Timanov, the high Priest, is attempting to maintain order by encouraging the populace to put their faith in Logar, the god of the Fire Mountain. Malkon, the young, ineffectual leader of the Sarns, is totally confused by what is happening. His confidence isn't helped by other Sarns who are attempting to prove that Logar doesn't' exist and thereby adding to the unrest. To make matters worse, the Master arrives. He has had an accident with his Tissue Compression Eliminator and has been vastly reduced in size and is in need of the restoration gases that are natural to the planet. Unable to tap the gas supply himself, he has had to enlist the aid of Kamelion. As the Doctor struggles to resist the Master, more revelations are revealed by Turlough. Sarn is a prison planet used by the Trions and Malkon is his brother. The identical scarring on their arms prove they have both been branded political prisoner from Trion. At last, the master had gained access tot he gases he requires, but the Doctor manages to intervene. Instead of receiving the correct amount, he is subjected to a massive dose, grows to several times his normal size and appears to be destroyed. Meanwhile, Turlough has summoned a Trion ship to take the Sarns off their decaying planet. Upon hearing that the regime has changed on Trion and that Turlough would be welcome there, he decides to return to his home planet. Bored with her current lifestyle on Earth, Peri asks if she can join the Doctor in his travels. This he agrees to and they set off in search of their next adventure. (6r) CAVES OF ANDROZANI - Landing on the planet of Androzani Minor, the Doctor and Peri soon find themselves in trouble. They stumble into a sticky substance that causes a strange irritation to their skin. Before they've had time to even scratch, they are captured by Krelper and Stolz, two gunrunners. They are not their prisoners for long, as they are almost immediately taken prisoner by Chellak and Salateen, two interplanetary low-lifes. Meanwhile, on Androzani Major, Morgus and Krau Timmin, two greedy entrepreneurs, are planning their next move. Their intention is to destroy Sharaz Jek, who controls the Spectrox mines on Androzani Minor and take over the mines themselves. Spectrox is a chemical that slows down the aging process and therefore is in great demand throughout the universe. Things unfortunately do not get any better for the Doctor and Peri who have again been captured, this time by the hideously scarred Sharaz Jek. Their plight is made even worse as they have both now become extremely ill, poisoned by the sticky substance they encountered earlier. The Doctor realizes they are dying and must find an antidote for the poison. Although he is finally able to find the cure, there is only enough for Peri and to avoid death, the Doctor is forced to regenerate, that is, change his physical form - but not before he has dealt with Morgus, the creature from the Magma, and Morgus' henchmen. This is the last episode of Peter Davison as Doctor Who.
