PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington DC, the traditional resting place of America's war heroes. Though Joe Louis, a black boxer from the American South, never actually saw combat, he is celebrated for two famous contests - in 1936 and 1938 - against Max Schmeling that represented everything his compatriots were fighting for against Nazi Germany. While he was a winner, Joe Louis was the toast of black and white America, but in later life he found himself cast aside by the leading lights of the Civil Rights movement.
