EPISODE DESCRIPTIONS SERIES SERIES 1 1. MAY TO DECEMBER - Alec Callendar is an affable solicitor, in his mid-50s, a widower with two grown children. Into his office walks one Zoe Angell, 27 years old, very attractive, a P. E. teacher who is seeking a divorce. (1) 2. FOOLS RUSH IN - Last week Zoe rushed from Alec's office in tears after bumping into her estranged husband's girlfriend. Zoe contacts Alec again and arranges lunch so they can discuss further her divorce proceedings. (2) 3. SEND IN THE CLOWNS - Alec and Zoe are both anxiously awaiting their first date, a visit to the theatre to see a current musical. Alec decides to deck himself in trendy gear for their big night out. (3) 4. ANYTHING YOU CAN DO - One mutual passion of Alec and Zoe is old musicals. They decide they need to know more of one another's professions. Alec punishes himself on the squash courts and Zoe bores herself rigid in the gallery of local courts of law. (4) 5. THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE ME - Alec's 53rd birthday is approaching and his daughter Simone has invited him to tea. Alec asks Zoe to accompany him, thinking it is about time that members of his family meet her. (5) 6. THERE'S A SMALL HOTEL - Alec and Zoe's relationship is rocketing along until the memory of Alec's deceased wife Jenny casts a pall on a dinner date. They decide what they need is a nice weekend together away from it all. (6)
SERIES 2 2. I REMEMBER IT WELL - Zoe has invited Alec round to meet her parents. What can a wealthy solicitor have in common with a couple of every day green grocers? Well, there is their age to start. (8) 3. YOU'RE DRIVING ME CRAZY - Alec finds it difficult to break with tradition. When Zoe offers to pay for one of their dinner dates, he is uncomfortable. He also is a bit up in the air as he is teaching Zoe how to drive. (9) 4. TIME AFTER TIME - Simone is concerned that her father might be overdoing things a bit, especially regarding Zoe. Alec counters, "You mean you think that granddads should not have sex lives." (10) 5. THERE'S A PLACE FOR US - Alec and Zoe reach a turning point in their relationship. The couple have decided to "live in sin," but there is the delicate matter of breaking this news to their respective families. (11) 6. NO OTHER LOVE - Alec has moved into Zoe's little flat along with a framed photograph of his idol, Perry Mason. Alec suffers from the "green eyed monster" when Zoe returns home with a young male staff member in tow. (12) 7. MY FUNNY VALENTINE - Alec moved out of Zoe's flat three weeks ago and is looking very morose around the office. His secretary Hillary tries to arrange a surprise Valentine date for Alec with Zoe, but he has already made dinner plans with the predatory Dollie Capper. (13)
SERIES 3 2. THE LOOK OF LOVE - Alec and Zoe start house hunting. Thanks to Zoe's giving Alec "The Look," as advised by Jamie, they buy the house of her dreams. (15) 3. TO CLOSE FOR COMFORT - Alec and Zoe employ an appalling contractor to rebuild the kitchen in their new home. Alec becomes unduly concerned about Jamie's relationship with a so-called client. (16) 4. IT'S ALL IN THE GAME - Zoe demonstrates her competitive streak in applying for Head of Department. Hilary has fallen for Vera's young nephew, Anthony, and shows him all the sights of London - much to Vera's disapproval. (17) 5. THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT - Zoe is made to feel inadequate when Simone boasts of how domesticated her mother was. Hilary remains infatuated with Anthony while Vera ponders how to put her off the scent. (18) 6. FEELINGS - Hilary tries matchmaking Vera with her Uncle Mike until she discovers that Vera already has a male companion. Alec becomes quite concerned when he learns that Jamie has a lump on this throat which will require an operation. (19) 7. I GUESS I'LL LET THEM CHANGE MY NAME - Jamie is falling in love with Zoe but hides it from Alec by pretending to fall instead for Hilary. When Alec informs Jamie that Zoe is expecting a baby, Jamie comes down to earth with a bump. (20)
SERIES 4 2. JUST LIKE A WOMAN - Alec hires a French au pair to help Zoe around the house. Jamie does his utmost to keep her out of the house. (22) 3. I'M OLD FASHIONED - Zoe discovers that Alec is anti-gay. However, when Zoe invites Larry and Pete round for dinner Alec discovers that his Inspector Dangerfield is not what he seems. (23) 4. THE PARTY'S OVER - Alec buys a mystery-suspense game from a car boot sale and invites Hilary, Jamie, Vera and Gerald round to play Saturday night. Everything goes to plan until Zoe takes a turn for the worse. (24) 5. THE CRYING GAME - Zoe is trying to get her life back to normal after suffering a miscarriage. Alec brings home Arnold, a lovable dog, in hopes that he can help cheer up Zoe. (25) 6. CATCH THE BOUQUET - Alec and Zoe reassure Vera that she ought to marry Gerald. On the happy occasion of the registry office wedding Hilary goes out of her way to catch the bouquet. (26)
SERIES 5 2. BABY LOVE - Alec and Zoe are now the proud parents of baby Fleur. But Alec has taken to parenthood too zealously for Zoe's liking. Back at the office Jamie is putting on a brave face as the new partner. (28) 3. SCHOOL DAYS - Baby Fleur is only three months old, but Alec is already making plans for her education. Hilary takes advice from Vera about her love life - and winds up all in tears. (29) 4. WHO CAN I TURN TO? - Jamie wants to update the office with a major purchase of equipment. Alec takes Zoe on a sentimental journey just to remind her of how much things have changed. (30) 5. LET THERE BE LOVE - Zoe is finding motherhood a strain. Alec is on the verge of securing an important contract which necessitates Jamie enduring a sparkling evening with the Proudloves. (31) 6. (TITLE UNKNOWN) - Baby Fleur's christening is looming and the battle for who will be Godparents is on. Hilary is with child. Alec goes in for a routine medical exam, the results of which have Zoe most concerned. (32)
SERIES 6 2. TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY BABY - Fleur cannot be watched at the office every day, so the hunt is on for a nanny. Whether high-brow governesses or pierced punk girls, none of the candidates will do. (34) 3. SON OF MY FATHER - Zoe volunteers Alec to give a speech for career day at school. Jamie has won acquittal for a villainous criminal and decides he was to abandon the practice of law. He and Alec have harsh words. (35) 4. CHERRY PINK AND APPLE BLOSSOM - Zoe's mother leaves Zoe's father and moves in with Zoe and Alec. Rosie's dreams of becoming a super model result in her being conned out of 800 quid by a fraudulent modeling school. (36) 5. LET THE HEARTACHES BEGIN - Jamie has a new business plan, something he calls one stop soliciting. Zoe tries to set up her sister, Debbie, with a hunky carpenter, but he only has eyes for Zoe as Alec notices. (37) 6. UNTIL IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO GO - Vera's thirty-year anniversary at the law firm has almost arrived. She is depressed that no one has remembered, but leave it to Rosie to come up with a suitable surprise. (38)
